FILM SERIES “Our Planet, Our Community, Our Future”

(in partnership with the Glasshouse Arts Centre)

Four films about global issues that impact locally on Stourbridge that were shown between January and May 2009.

FILM: MESSAGE IN THE WAVES A moving portrayal of life on the Hawaiian islands showing how the proximity of the sea has given local people a close-up view on how our use of plastics impacts on the environment. Captivating and informative.

FILM: END OF SUBURBIA This film takes us through the scenarios that we would face in the event of oil being less accessible. It indicates how our addiction to oil and the availability of ‘easy energy’ has lead to unsustainable town planning and an expansion of the suburban lifestyle. Engaging and challenging to watch.

FILM: THE POWER OF COMMUNITY With the sub-heading ‘How Cuba survived Peak Oil’, this film documents the various ways in which Cubans transformed their urban spaces for food production during a time of scarcity. Inspiring and enjoyable.

FILM: THE NEW INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION William Mcdonough’s film takes us to the cutting edge of responsible business practice and shows how corporations and products can simultaneously be profitable, innovative and good for the environment. You’ll come away with hope for the future of business and the planet.

Each event was followed by a discussion forum for anyone interested in exploring local solutions to the points raised in the film.

Transition Stourbridge ran six monthly litter around the area of Stourbridge between January and June 2009.          We have some great green spaces around our town – the parks, canals, the River Stour and the historic monarch’s Way footpath – which are spoilt by littering. Our aim was to make a small contribution to improving these local areas, by giving them a bit of love and raising awareness locally of Transition Stourbridge.
