River Stour boat launch and next event – Sunday 18th May

Little Stour Warrior BoatOur next event…

Date: Sunday 18th May, 10.15 for 10.30
Where:  The Stour bridge – Park at Bonded warehouse

The Mission

It is definitely a far more adventurous and challenging site than we have ever done before. The work is under the two bridges so light is a bit limited. Do you have a head torch?

  • Rod is asking a friend to provide an extra strong winch
  • Helen hopes to bring some buoyancy jackets
  • Rosanne plans some better waders will look into head torches

We Need

At least 8 confident and fairly robust people to go into the river and also two people to work the winch to pull the rubbish out. Then there are people needed to cart the rubbish a very short way for the Council to pick up.

The Boat

The ‘Little Stour Warrior’

  • The boat will have her new name painted on her and a new Save our Stour banner.
  • Rosanne will bring some pure Malvern Water to launch and name her with.
  • Geraldine would you do the honours here if you are coming?
  • Anyone who would like to support the launch would be most welcome!

Please Bring

If you intend to go into the river please bring

  • A strong stick. (this really is needed)
  • A head torch (if you have one)

And please let me Rosanne know (rosanneadams@yahoo.co.uk) if you will be able to come and where you think you might help, thanks.

Environment Agency

I had a talk with Julia Morris of the Environment Agency this week and she emphasised how important it is for people to report pollution, smelly or discoloured outfalls, etc to the emergency number of the Environment Agency
0800 807060.

She described how one report caught several misconnections from new houses which were polluting the river.

Boat

Little Stour Warrior
Little Stour Warrior

Rod has finished working on the boat and she is now stored behind Wayne’s garage. She will be named Little Stour Warrior. We are now planning her official launch and naming and when this will take place. Hopefully we will be able to make a good event out of this.

Photo competition and next year’s calendar

Laurie has very kindly designed and had printed A4 and A3 posters for the competition if you are able to distribute any of these to others who would reliably get them put up in churches, community spaces, shops, schools, colleges and any other useful space please let Rosanne know.

I will bring some to the next event, but would appreciate addresses to send them to if you won’t be coming and could help with this. I can also send it by email if you could print it yourself. Many thanks that would really be a very great help.

River Stour Event – Sunday 6th April

Stevens-Park-Wollescote

Next River Stour clean-up morning

Date: Sunday 6th April
Time: 10.15 for 10.30
Place: Ludgebridge Brook (map)

Parking: You can either park in the hollow at the bottom of Wollescote road (having passed Wollescote Hall on your left) or actually in the car park at Wollescote Hall. Contact Rosanne, if you’d like to know more…

Ludgebridge brook

Ludgebridge brook is a stream which feeds into the River Stour, the brook runs through very pretty woodland, under Wollescote Road and into Stevens Park, Wollescote, Stourbridge.  It eventually runs into the Stour somewhere around Bagley Street.

The area we are going to clean is off the Wollescote Road. (A gate on the right.. Hall on the left).

Masses of rubbish

We have cleaned masses of rubbish out of the brook in the past but never quite got to grips with the appalling rubbish at the top of the woodland and into Hilltop. There is also a bit of rubbish in the brook. It would be good if we could get at the rubbish before the vegetation starts to cover it. When we can be more certain of river depth and clarity we’ll be able to get back into the river.

Photo Competition

Last year we ran a photographic competition to get people down to the Stour. We also published a calendar from the photos entered. If we are to do this again we need help with the technical side! If anyone feels they could take this on could you please let me know, thanks (rosanneadams@yahoo.co.uk).

Boat Launch

Message from Rod: ‘our boat is almost ready to launch’!  We will have to find a name for her!

All the best and thanks to everyone for the tremendous support and interest in the project. Rosanne

River Stour clean-up event – Sunday 8th September

Bridge near Haden Hill Park, Cradley Heath (Gordon Griffiths)
Bridge near Haden Hill Park, Cradley Heath
(Gordon Griffiths)

Next River Stour event and some update news

Date: Sunday 8th September 2013

Place: Bridge Street, Cradley Heath.

Time: 10.15 for 10.30

Directions: Take the Birmingham road if you are coming from Stourbridge. Continue through Lye and straight on to Hayes Park Road. Turn left on to Colley Lane to Bridge Street where we should be parked up on the right. There are some parking spaces in Little Crescent on the right just before the bridge and also at the tyre place on the left (ADM Tyres).

Task: This site was drawn to our attention by a Cradley Heath resident so this will be our first attempt to clean the river beyond our own area of Stourbridge.

The site is more difficult than any we have attempted so far as the river has rather steep sides and the vegetation is high and thick. There is Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed (all invasive species). Continue reading “River Stour clean-up event – Sunday 8th September”
