River Stour Event – Sunday 11th November

Date: Sunday 11th November at 2pm

We will be picking along (and in!) the brook alongside Hodge Hill and Central Avenue.

It will be best to park at Wollescote Hall (Postcode is DY9 7JG & map) and walk down the hill along Wollescote Road (walk out of the main park gates and turn left). There is an entrance for walkers just before Hodge Hill. I’ll make sure there is a hi vis vest tied to the gate so everyone can see it.

Please bring wellington boots and waterproofs if you want to get into the brook – it is very muddy! For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there is plenty of litter on nearby paths and verges and alongside the brook in Wollescote Park.

River Stour Clear Water Project update – June 2012

Last Clean-up Day

Wayne Haywood with Julia Morris from the Environment Agency
Wayne Haywood with Julia Morris from the Environment Agency

We returned to the blockage caused by a fallen tree in the wooded area near the Bonded Warehouse and a lot of energy and enthusiasm went into clearing out the debris and plastic caught in it. We also litter picked and pulled out quite a lot of Himalayan balsam. There is a lot of rubbish lying in the river silt. It would be nice to be able to extract some of this in the future.

Future Dates

We are going to alternate between Saturdays and Sundays for events so the next one will be:

Sunday 17th June (Coalbourne Brook)
Meeting at the carpark on Collis Street at 10.30. As vegetation is high all around the brook, we suggest protective clothing and wellies. The brook has some litter in it but also a lot of blockage from wood. Small saws might be useful and if you have any equipment like hoes and rakes that you could bring it would be useful too.

Saturday 14th July (to be confirmed)
To be confirmed but it will probably be a ‘get to know river walk’/litter pick and look at the outflows shown to us by the Environment Agency where pollution can occur. This is one of their requests that we learn to spot and report pollution. There will probably be Himalayan balsam to pull as well.

Environment Agency Meeting

We are hoping to meet Julia Morris from the Environment Agency shortly to see where the water testing points are and have selected the areas where the pollution shows up as worst. (zinc, ammonia, low oxygen, phosphate, cadmium, classed variously as moderate poor and bad).

Do let us know if you have thoughts or suggestions for the future?

If you are interested in getting involved with the River Stour project, we’d love to hear from you…Please contact Rosanne using the form below:
