River Stour Event – Sunday 28th September

River Stour, The Stour BridgeNext River Stour Event

We will be clearing the rubbish from the river under the bridge and nearby and once again have The Little Stour Warrior helping to transport it.

Date: Sunday 28th September, 10:15 for a 10.30 start
Place:  The Stour Bridge near the Bonded Warehouse, Stourbridge
Parking: Bonded Warehouse or Fox Removals

UPDATE

Very many thanks to all those who came last Sunday to clear the silt from the slipway by the bridge. It was a massive task but amazingly it got done with some formidable teamwork! Helen V. cleared the last bit of grass and weeds from the lower parapet and that’s now ready for some plants and seeds.

It’s beginning to look a bit more dignified! If you are coming and have plants or seeds.. please bring them. There are some more ambitious thoughts rumbling around about future improvements! Hopefully with the activity going on in the bridge area it will draw attention to the river. We had some friendly comments from passers by.

Litter pickers:
These are very hard to manage and transport. Would anybody have a large sports type bag
or two smaller ones they don’t need? The length needs to be at least 36″. It would be a great
help.. and they don’t need to be beautiful.. just strongish! Thanks.

So many thanks again to all of you who are making it possible to get something done about the River. Hopefully little by little, the ‘lost River Stour’ might become a bit less lost!

All the best, Rosanne

River Stour boat launch Photos – May 2014

A lovely Sunny morning, with lots of enthusiastic river clean up volunteers ready for action.

Geraldine Bray named the new boat the ‘Little Stour Warrior’ and she was launched down the slipway into the river – helping to haul out rubbish from under the Stour Bridge.  The pile of rubbish included 12 shopping trolleys!

Those who had brought seeds set to work cleaning out a gulley in a girder and planting seeds to cheer up a forlorn spot.

Environment Agency

I had a talk with Julia Morris of the Environment Agency this week and she emphasised how important it is for people to report pollution, smelly or discoloured outfalls, etc to the emergency number of the Environment Agency
0800 807060.

She described how one report caught several misconnections from new houses which were polluting the river.

Boat

Little Stour Warrior
Little Stour Warrior

Rod has finished working on the boat and she is now stored behind Wayne’s garage. She will be named Little Stour Warrior. We are now planning her official launch and naming and when this will take place. Hopefully we will be able to make a good event out of this.

Photo competition and next year’s calendar

Laurie has very kindly designed and had printed A4 and A3 posters for the competition if you are able to distribute any of these to others who would reliably get them put up in churches, community spaces, shops, schools, colleges and any other useful space please let Rosanne know.

I will bring some to the next event, but would appreciate addresses to send them to if you won’t be coming and could help with this. I can also send it by email if you could print it yourself. Many thanks that would really be a very great help.

River Stour Event – Sunday 6th April

Stevens-Park-Wollescote

Next River Stour clean-up morning

Date: Sunday 6th April
Time: 10.15 for 10.30
Place: Ludgebridge Brook (map)

Parking: You can either park in the hollow at the bottom of Wollescote road (having passed Wollescote Hall on your left) or actually in the car park at Wollescote Hall. Contact Rosanne, if you’d like to know more…

Ludgebridge brook

Ludgebridge brook is a stream which feeds into the River Stour, the brook runs through very pretty woodland, under Wollescote Road and into Stevens Park, Wollescote, Stourbridge.  It eventually runs into the Stour somewhere around Bagley Street.

The area we are going to clean is off the Wollescote Road. (A gate on the right.. Hall on the left).

Masses of rubbish

We have cleaned masses of rubbish out of the brook in the past but never quite got to grips with the appalling rubbish at the top of the woodland and into Hilltop. There is also a bit of rubbish in the brook. It would be good if we could get at the rubbish before the vegetation starts to cover it. When we can be more certain of river depth and clarity we’ll be able to get back into the river.

Photo Competition

Last year we ran a photographic competition to get people down to the Stour. We also published a calendar from the photos entered. If we are to do this again we need help with the technical side! If anyone feels they could take this on could you please let me know, thanks (rosanneadams@yahoo.co.uk).

Boat Launch

Message from Rod: ‘our boat is almost ready to launch’!  We will have to find a name for her!

All the best and thanks to everyone for the tremendous support and interest in the project. Rosanne
