River Clean-up Event – Sunday 28th June

River Stour, The Stour BridgeNext river clean up event

Date: Sunday 28th June
Time: 10.15 for 10.30
Place: River Stour Bridge
Parking: Wherever you can along Millrace Lane or Bonded Warehouse area. Watch out for
No Parking signs there.
Contact: Please contact rosanneadams@yahoo.co.uk if you intend to come. Thanks

All being well we will go back to finish up under the Stour Bridge and under Fox’s. As always it depends on whether we get a deluge and the river levels change. If there is doubt I will email again. This needs people who are prepared to go into the river to load up the boat and others to barrow the rubbish up to the top of the slipway.

Anybody who would rather something a bit less demanding can contact Richard Brooks on rjbglobal@btinternet.com. Richard is waging war against himalayan balsam which is an invasive species which doesn’t allow space for our native species. He would very much like help on Sunday if you would prefer to do that. He has already made a huge impression almost banishing it by the river at Richardson Drive.

Update

  • The flowers on the bridge parapets look really marvellous and have done brilliantly. Bees are visiting them and quite a few people have stopped to admire them! By the way Waitrose has a green counters box for wild flowers all round the ring road if anyone’s interested!
  • Rosanne has been to three primary schools to show the Message in the Waves film and talk to the children about the river Stour. It seemed to go quite well and it would be good to do a bit more. Many thanks to Jean and Helen for making that possible. The teachers and children were really great.
  • Transition Stourbridge has reprinted Gerald Darby’s booklet on the river Stour .. its history etc with quite a few photos. They sell at £3.95 of which £1.50 goes to Mary Stevens Hospice. Available at Fair & Square, Market St, Stourbridge. I will bring some on Sunday so bring some money if you’d like one.

So, hoping for a fine week and a low water level and that we may be able to finish the job under the two bridges.

All the best, Rosanne

River Stour Event – Sunday 29th June

IMG_8334Next River Stour clean-up event

Date: Sunday 29th June, 10.15 for 10.30

Place: Richardson Drive ( Off Wollaston Road), Stourbridge

Directions: Take Harrop way off Richardson Drive. Parking needs to be sensitive as it’s a residential area.

There is some nasty rubbish in the river around the small bridge there and a great deal of Himalayan Balsam which needs to be pulled out (for those who don’t want to get into the river). If you have some favourite gloves please bring them or we can provide.

Himalayan Balsam is an invasive species which is taking over and ousting our native plants (though it’s true the bees do like it.) This is a good time to remove it.

We hope to get back under the bridge at some point before too long to finish the job with the help of ‘The Warrior’!

I understand that the Council may have given the green light for a sign on the Stour Bridge saying River Stour.

All the best,
Rosanne

River Stour boat launch and next event – Sunday 18th May

Little Stour Warrior BoatOur next event…

Date: Sunday 18th May, 10.15 for 10.30
Where:  The Stour bridge – Park at Bonded warehouse

The Mission

It is definitely a far more adventurous and challenging site than we have ever done before. The work is under the two bridges so light is a bit limited. Do you have a head torch?

  • Rod is asking a friend to provide an extra strong winch
  • Helen hopes to bring some buoyancy jackets
  • Rosanne plans some better waders will look into head torches

We Need

At least 8 confident and fairly robust people to go into the river and also two people to work the winch to pull the rubbish out. Then there are people needed to cart the rubbish a very short way for the Council to pick up.

The Boat

The ‘Little Stour Warrior’

  • The boat will have her new name painted on her and a new Save our Stour banner.
  • Rosanne will bring some pure Malvern Water to launch and name her with.
  • Geraldine would you do the honours here if you are coming?
  • Anyone who would like to support the launch would be most welcome!

Please Bring

If you intend to go into the river please bring

  • A strong stick. (this really is needed)
  • A head torch (if you have one)

And please let me Rosanne know (rosanneadams@yahoo.co.uk) if you will be able to come and where you think you might help, thanks.
